IS THERE A JUDIAZER IN THE HOUSE?

Within the early church there was an ongoing conflict between two groups who both claimed to be followers of Jesus Christ. One group held to the teachings of Jesus as taught by the apostles regarding salvation in Christ alone. The other group also held to the teachings of Jesus but added certain Jewish religious practices, particularly circumcision. As the New American Commentary explains, "...Paul waged a steady campaign against a group of false teachers, commonly known as Judiazers, who had sown great confusion among the apostle's recent converts by teaching that becoming Jewish was necessary for salvation."

It is interesting to note the many beliefs held in common by both the original followers of Christ and the zealous Judiazers. Apparently, both of these groups claimed Christ as savior, both held to the authority of Scriptures, both acknowledged the presence of the Holy Spirit, both were "evangelistic," and at one time or another both groups were accepted as genuine followers of Christ by many first-century Christian congregations. Certainly, both groups claimed to love Jesus and His Gospel.

So, why the conflict? Weren't they all Christians? And what became of each of these groups?

Paul was particularly forceful in his instructions regarding the Judiazers and their gospel+religious works. The apostle charged, "Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ." Paul's solution to this problem was that "even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!" The gospel of the Judiazers "is really no gospel at all." (Galatians1:6-9)

The apostles instructed believers to give no ground when it came to preserving the purity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. John pointedly stated, "Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God." (2John 9) The writer of Hebrews warned, "We must pay more careful attention therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away." (Hebrews 2:1)

Obviously, regardless of how many other biblical truths might be held in common, anyone or any group that addes anything onto the Gospel receives the sternest of rebukes and a severe condemnation by the inspired Word of God. Dr. John Walvoord points out the seriousness of such an act, "When the gospel message is corrupted, the way of salvation is confused and people are in danger of being eternally lost."

We must remember that these "Judiazers" confessed to be Christians and did hold to a high view of Christ, morality, and evangelistic zeal. As the New American Commentary explains, "Obviously, the Judiazers and their disciples did not for a moment believe that the imposition of circumcision involved their alienation from Christ. To the contrary, they saw it as an enhancement, a necessary additive required for the true possession of salvation."

And yet, God's Word tells us that Paul considered these individuals "false brothers" -- an amazingly strong statement regarding men who believed the Gospel but added just a little onto it. In today's modern culture of placing social politeness above obedience to God's Word, such a dogmatic statement aimed at specific individuals would earn anyone the labels of "offensive," "rude," "unloving," and UNCHRISTIAN!!! The Judiazers could go into many churches today, proclaiming "We love Jesus; Yes we do!" and they would be accepted without any question. Boy, would the apostles ever be in trouble in churches today!

Anyway, back to the story of the Judiazers... So, what happened to them?

Apparently, for the most part they lost the argument regarding their view that circumcision was necessary for salvation. But, belief in religious works does not die easily, and it was not long before another religious work took the place of circumcision. History records evidence of a growing effort to impose baptism as a religious work necessary for salvation.

Now, preaching the Gospel with baptism added as NECESSARY for salvation, individuals influenced by the Judiazers beliefs found new life for their faith in the power of religious works (known as "sacraments" today). It was not long before this teaching developed into baptism as THE MEANS by which salvation was conveyed to an individual. With this belief in place, soon came the call for conveying salvation through baptism to newly born children. The effect of this was to convince people that they were made right with God on the basis of a sacramental religious work performed by a church official. Obviously, this was the very opposite of what Jesus and the apostles taught.

Page #2

Gradually, though, these "evangelistic" Judiazers infiltrated churches throughout the world with their gospel+works message. To the undiscerning their religion looked more like genuine Christianity; in truth it was the same perversion of the Gospel... baptism or circumcision or whatever, ANY religious work added to the Gospel makes it "no gospel at all." Biblically, baptism is only for those who have already been made right with God through faith in Christ alone. To the heirs of the Judiazers heresy, religious works called sacraments took the place of faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Spread out over several generations, the change was so gradual that most people didn't realize the contrast between true biblical faith in Christ and sacramentalistic faith in Christ plus religious works. In fact, these were actually two distinctly different religions... one was true biblical Christianity and the other a deceptive counterfeit. Both of these religions have lived and multiplied through the centuries under the banner of "Christianity."

This is why we have multiplied millions of people in the world today who believe they are Christians, even though the gospel they have been taught is terminally flawed, being "no gospel at all" according to the Bible. Consider these quotes from the official teachings of three different worldwide groups that claim to be "Christian"...

"Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and makes us members of Christ's Body, the Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God.... Infants are baptized so that they can share citizenship in the Covenant, membership in Christ, and redemption by God." (Book of Common Prayer, Episcopal Church)

"The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation.... The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are 'reborn of water and the Spirit.' God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism...." (The New Catholic Catechism, 1994)

"In baptism infants enter into a new life in Christ as children of God and members of the Body of Christ. The baptism of an infant incorporates him or her into the community of faith and nurture, including membership in the local church." "We affirm that... the sacrament is primarily a gift of divine grace. ...baptism is an act of God in and through the Church." (United Methodist Church, 1996)

So, is there a Judiazer in the house? Today, the Judiazer heresy of sacramentalism is alive and well; its well-meaning adherents are as "evangelistic" as ever, bringing false confidence to millions. What can we do? It seems like such an insurmountable problem! God's Word has the only answer...

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God....

Jude 1:3-4

Some today speak as if obeying this part of God's Word will harm our Christian witness or cause division among Christians. Dear brethren, is it not well past time to stand on God's Word and do God's work in God's way? Evangelism will not be sold short if we obey God's Word to contend for the Faith within the Church, but rather, true evangelism will increase, for God honors His Word and blesses the obedience of His people.

God has decreed that the road to Heaven is indeed very NARROW; it is not broad enough to include any means but Christ alone. Faith in religious works insures death, eternal death, whether such belief is founded upon the official teachings of a group calling itself Christian, or the privately held confidence of an evangelical church member who has been "baptized" yet has never truly trusted in Christ alone. There is but one true Christ, the Christ who is all-sufficient. Any Jesus who needs the religious works of men to help them gain their own salvation is indeed another Jesus. Paul scolded the Corinthian church, saying, "if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. ...such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:4,13)

To have faith in Christ+religious works is to have no Christ at all; to trust in Christ alone is to have all of Christ and in Him, eternal life.

Missionary Family News...

Cindy was thoroughly surprised! The ladies put together a big 25th wedding anniversary party for us, and Cindy didn't know a thing about it until we pulled in the parking lot at the fire station. It was a great time with folks from all up and down the bayou, relatives and friends from all over. God has been so good to us. Jeremy is home from Mexico for a visit, Joshua is in right now, Joseph makes us all laugh every day,

Cindy is doing pretty well, and I am my usual sweet and lovable self. The garden looks good (tomatoes blooming already), and we have had a good crop of kids (goats) this spring. Looks like we should have around 45 kids all together by May. Someone brought us oysters yesterday and crabs today. I hear the fish are biting, if I just had time to go. So, hey, what could be better?

The next three months will be busy taking care of family medical needs. Joseph will have his seventh reconstructive surgery on his feet. Doctors will also replace the lens in his right eye which has been affected by his condition. Cindy will try again to get a medication pump implant for pain control.

Mission and Church News...

Our January Bible Conference was great! It was like stepping back in time for me, sort of like church meetings I remember when I was just a young boy. Brothers Tommy French, R.E. Clark, Philip Hawkes, and Reggie Hanberry preached God's Word with integrity, clarity, and power. We had very good attendance. Folks came from up and down the bayou as well as brethren from other churches in our area. We also had a Deacon Ordination service for Calvin Dehart. There were nine churches represented from our association (even though our association's leadership does not recognize us in fellowship). We have another Bible Conference scheduled in May, and we are hosting our first Contenders Conference March 30-31. We are actively involved in encouraging and assisting other churches in planning and conducting similar meetings.

Several call or write each month to ask what is going on regarding our building situation. I do not know of any change or progress in this area, although I assume that God is still at work! Our building remains locked and unattended. I have not seen anyone over there since June of last year. Our pleas for Louisiana Baptist Convention

executives to tell the truth to our former sponsoring church have apparently been rejected to this point. The last word we had was that if I would resign as pastor and our church apologize for having publicly confronted Dr. Lewis regarding his endorsement of the ECT, then leaders in our former sponsoring church "might" consider giving our people back their building.

So, we continue meeting in homes and enjoying good fellowship in the Lord. It is obvious to all that a church does not need a building to be a church. Our people have gained a much clearer understanding of who they are as a church of the Lord Jesus Christ under His authority and watchcare. Although some at a distance consider us foolish,

others are challenged to consider the importance of the purity of the Gospel and obedience to God's Word. God is faithful, and He is growing His church here, not only in spite of, but in many ways because of these troubles we have been going through. Our people pray for those in leadership who by simply telling the truth could bring about a proper correction to this whole situation. And in the meantime, we continue to proclaim the Gospel.

SBC News...

Cindy and I attended the SBC Executive Committee meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, last month. This was a reassuring time for both of us. The brotherly kindness and respect which was expressed and the obvious concern for our people was very encouraging. The warm fellowship with brethren at top levels of leadership was uplifting.

After arriving back home I received an e-mail message from an SBC agency executive. I will always cherish this message which said in part, "I appreciated the opportunity to visit with you briefly in Nashville and affirm you for your convictions and the prophetic word you bring to Southern Baptist Leadership. ...I accept your heart-felt sincerity and admire and support anyone that would stand so firmly on their convictions when it may run counter to conventional wisdom and one's popularity and reputation."

Another Fisher of Men...

ReligionToday, March 17, 1999,

Glen Chappelear fishes for souls. The Dallas, Ga., graduate of Southwestern Seminary ministers at churches and also is a professional fisherman on the Bass Master Tour. He began to be concerned about people who hunt and fish on Sunday morning rather than attend church, and looked for a way to minister to them. Chappelear left his church position and formed Sportsmen's Outreach as a full-time ministry. He is a Southern Baptist missionary, receiving support though churches, individuals, speaking engagements, and sponsors. ...Chappelear spends time with partners in boats during tournaments. He recently shared the gospel with a man who made a commitment to Christ right in the bass boat, he told On Mission magazine. He also shares the gospel during devotional meetings, tournaments, camps, conferences, and mission days at churches. ...More than 120 people made decisions to become a Christian last year during banquets at which Chappelear spoke. He also holds Outreach Fishing Seminars to share how to reach fishermen for Christ.

Financial Policy...

Our financial policy is really very simple; we operate as the Lord provides resources. We do not solicit funds from the public, and we do not sell anything. Through the generous donations of church members here and other supporters who give as the Lord leads them, we are able to continue in the mission work and ministries that the Lord has entrusted to this church. We do not relate specific financial needs unless someone requests that information. We send out a "NeedsLetter" periodically to those who specifically request to be on that mailing list.

We maintain no operating reserve. We do not borrow money, thus, we are able to put everything the Lord gives to us directly into supporting genuine ministry. As we have resources, we are able to send out publications, assist with conferences, travel to denominational meetings, etc.

We like to take every opportunity to say "thank you" to all those who faithfully support the work that the Lord has entrusted to us. This work begins with evangelism and discipleship here on this mission field, and extends literally around the world through informative publications and our website on the World Wide Web. Among those who endorse this ministry are churches, pastors and other individuals, Bible study classes, SBC and LBC leaders, and others. We will be glad to send you a list of references. If you have questions or wish to know about specific needs, please write or call.

OUR READERS WRITE...

Mississippi friend

I have been getting your new letter ever since I came down with the disaster mission group right after Andrew hit your area. We stayed in your church building while we did some clean up and repair work. The majority of the ones who came down on the trip have been keeping your church in our prayers and will continue to do so. Keep the faith and we will continue to hold ya'll up in prayer. God loves you and so do we.

Louisiana pastor

Hold the line bro. Moser!! We can not allow truth to fall by the wayside. There are still some men who hold to the truth and preach it uncompromisingly in SBC churches. God's grace and power go with you.

Louisiana pastor

Thank you for sending us your newsletter. I agree with you on your stand against ecumenism. It appears that pentecostal/charismatic inroads have been plowed and paved for the sake of numbers. I'm with you brother!

Louisiana pastor

I, too, am a Christian and a pastor. I would hope that I would always stand for truth. God bless you for doing so.

Mississippi friend

Jerry, I do appreciate the work you are doing down there. This ECT matter needs to continually be shown to us Baptists so our people can understand the RCC position on obtaining eternal life. It is not achieved through sacraments. We do pray for your group at BDBMC. We pray that those responsible will give the church building back to your congregation. We sent money from our church, and we came to help with its construction for your people, not anyone else!!! Jerry and Cindy, we love you folks. Keep up the the Lords work!!!! Your friend in Christ.

Theriot, Louisiana (16 year old)

Okay, want to hear some straight-out-of-the-Bible-get-down-to-it-preachin & teachin? This is the place for you! (This is from one of our young ladies in the church. It's good to hear encouragement from your own children, isn't it?)

ECT News...

As we have stated before, the ECT consortium is an ongoing, organized, ecumenical effort. Some have scoffed at our saying this, claiming that "the ECT is just a piece of paper, simply a passing thing that will have no lasting effect." Nevertheless, while these critics hide their heads in the sand, ecumenists are betraying the Gospel and confusing the lost on a worldwide scale. There are now two ECT documents endorsed by leading evangelicals and Catholics here in the United States. Both deceptively promote perverted doctrine. A third ECT document has been going through the drafting and editing process for the past few months. From a doctrinal viewpoint, ECT-I attacked the doctrine of salvation "by grace alone," and ECT-II compromised the doctrine of "by faith alone." Both of these documents left open the question of the doctrine of "by Christ alone." ECT-III will deal with the doctrine of "Scripture alone." Obviously, regardless of their self-proclaimed good motives and good intentions, the evangelical endorsers of these documents are being used to attack and destroy the very foundations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

ECT has become an international scandal within evangelical circles. There is now an ECT-Ireland, drawn up on the foundation of the heretical ECT-I and ECT-II documents and endorsed by more than 120 evangelical and Roman Catholic leaders. Another ECT group is forming in South America with a formal meeting this month in Ecuador to draft a foundational document, again guided by the ECT in the U.S. According to the ECT's authors, the Vatican has given guidance to the ongoing ecumenical work of the ECT through Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy, the Pope's leading ecumenical strategist.

The annual meeting of ExCatholics For Christ will be held March 26-27 in Dallas, Texas. The focus of the meeting will be to confront the ECT and call for public repentance by each of its evangelical endorsers, including four prominent Southern Baptists. The theme of the conference is "ECT+5; A Biblical Response." Conference leaders include S. Lewis Johnson, John Ankerberg, Dave Hunt, Mike Gendron, and others.

Interesting Quotes...

ECT endorser Larry Lewis

"I had significant input in the drafting of the [ECT] document." "I think history will record the issuance of this document as a definitive moment in the history of Christendom. I am happy to have had a small part."

Roman Catholic priest Richard John Neuhaus, ECT co-author

"The ECT is an unprecedented accord, a growing pattern of convergence... between evangelicals and Catholics" and "a signal for a historic realignment of Christian communities...."

Associated Press

"ECT is a major step toward ecumenicism by the Southern Baptist Convention...."

Charles Colson, ECT co-author

"The ECT gave nothing away and did not compromise the Gospel."

Bill Streich, SBC NAMB trustee

"The ECT has obviously created a door through which ecumenism can now easily flow into the life of the Southern Baptist Convention."

President Bill Clinton, February 7, 1999, on the death of King Hussein of Jordan, a Muslim

"The Koran teaches, you belong to God and you return to him. Today, my friend is in Paradise and God has welcomed home a good and faithful servant."

Roman Catholic theologian Peter Kreeft, ECT signatory, in his book Ecumenical Jihad

"Perhaps in Heaven the most ardent worshippers of the Eucharistic Christ will be the "outsiders", like pious Muslims. Even now, without the Eucharistic Christ, they pray five times each day.... The power that will reunite the Church and win the world is Eucharistic adoration."

Charles Colson, ECT co-author, in his endorsement of Kreeft's Ecumenical Jihad

"Peter Kreeft is one of the premier apologists in America today. ...one of our most valiant intellectual warriors."

SBC missionary in a Roman Catholic dominated country

"I wish the powers that be would realize the positive benefits of humbling themselves, admitting their wrong, and backing away from such an endorsement [of the ECT].  If pride is the motivating factor here that keeps them from change, we can only pray that the Lord Jesus would break through the barriers and pull down those strongholds.  In fact, that is what I'm going to pray for."

Is it unloving to tell people the truth about spiritual matters even when you know it will offend them?

If it is, then the Bible is an unloving book, and you and I should stop witnessing lest anyone might become convicted of their sin!

THE BIBLE SAYS...

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

1 Peter 3:15-17

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This letter to the Editor was published in WORLD magazine. The highlighted sentence was deleted by the editor.
It is encouraging to see WORLD magazine addressing theological issues with integrity. Although religious belief is an easy area to fall into misunderstanding, honesty is still the only policy worthy of followers of Jesus Christ. R. Albert Mohler did a service to both evangelicals and Roman Catholics (12/19/98) by honestly pointing out the watershed issue of indulgences. In his accompanying article Edward Plowman astutely pointed out the hesitancy of modern ecumenists to openly discuss this historically divisive issue. And this aversion is not surprising, since Richard Neuhaus and Chuck Colson's ECT consortium has declared that the new birth may be "bestowed in the sacrament of baptism...." Claiming to be temporarily setting aside such watershed doctrinal issues as indulgences, baptismal regeneration, and sacramental grace, this group has declared a unity based upon some beliefs which are supposedly held in common. This is like trying to build a house without a secure foundation... disaster is certain. On either side of this theological divide, for leaders to set aside fundamental beliefs in order to declare a unity that does not exist... this is simply dishonest and unbefitting of men who claim to be followers of Christ. My thanks to WORLD for bravely going where few magazines wish to go... that is to uphold honesty on all sides of the isle.
