Amsterdam 2000: Preaching Ecumenism, QUIETLY!

You won’t hear much criticism of Amsterdam 2000, an international conference for evangelists going on this week in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. There are few indeed who would dare to say anything negative regarding what is probably the last major production of Billy Graham. Dr. Graham is recovering from surgery and unable to attend the event which has drawn over 10,000 participants from around the world. Even Jesus Christ did not share the broad popularity of this aging evangelist... while the religious and political leaders of Jesus’ day sought to stop the influence of Jesus; modern religious and political leaders have aggressively courted the favor of Billy Graham for decades.

In keeping with the purpose of RADEN, let me give you some facts and thoughts you may not see printed elsewhere...

What’s the problem with Amsterdam 2000? The problem lies, not with the participants, but with several of the speakers. Among those preaching from the platform of this event, promoted as teachers to be followed, are some of the world’s most deceptive ecumenists. (for a definition of ecumenism, see the note at bottom of this page)

Hear me out, now. I know it is easier to ignore such things and join in with other’s praise of this event.

Here are just a couple of disturbing facts:

(1) At least five key speakers at Amsterdam 2000 have openly stated that a person may receive the new birth by having it "bestowed in the sacrament of baptism." (see footnote #1)

(2) One key speaker is the head of a denomination that officially teaches and practices sacramental faith, and which recognizes the unbiblical office of the Roman Catholic pope as a "gift to all of Christianity." This particular leader, though a professed sacramentalist, was introduced to Amsterdam 2000 participants as a fellow "evangelical." (see footnote #2)

This is hardly in keeping with God’s Word that says, "I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them." (Romans 16:17)

One message of Amsterdam 2000 seems to be, "I beseech you, brethren, ignore the fact that certain men cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine you have learned; and sit under their preaching."

(1) Three speakers at Amsterdam 2000 are endorsers of the ECT. At least two other speakers are ordained Anglican church leaders.

(2) Archbishop George Carey is head of the Anglican (Episcopalian) communion. The official teaching of the Anglican Church is that "Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and makes us members of Christ's Body, the Church,  and inheritors of the kingdom of God.... Infants are baptized so that they can share citizenship in the Covenant, membership in Christ, and redemption by God." (Book of Common Prayer, Anglican, Episcopal Church) Back

The RADEN Report is a news and commentary service purposed to inform and educate the body of Christ regarding the dangers of ecumenism. For our purposes, ecumenism is defined as cooperative ventures of an evangelistic nature with individuals and/or groups which promote errant doctrine. Much of the New Testament was written to oppose the false doctrines of men who claimed to be Christian teachers, yet were bringing in "destructive heresies." According to Jude we are to "earnestly contend for the Faith that was once for all delivered unto the saints." This we aim to do and to encourage others in this part of God's work. If we can be of assistance to you in this way, please let us know. Additional copies (hard-copy) of RADEN are available, as well as other resources. Why not pass RADEN on to a friend? If you would like to read the ECT document, click here.  We also have the ECT put together into booklets, if you would like for us to send you one or more, request it by email.   Please include your home address and how many you would like.
