Ecumenical Entanglements...

Charles Colson promoted by ERLC

Driving to town yesterday (7/10/00) I was listening to WBSN, the radio station from our New Orleans Baptist Theoligical Seminary. I happened to tune in just in time to hear Charles Colson speaking on Richard Land's radio program. At the end of the program, Dr. Land gave a glowing promotion of Mr. Colson and the worldview promoted in Colson's newest book, How Now Shall We Live. Mr. Colson had a lot of good things to say, but one must remember that Charles Colson is one of today's most ardent ecumenical activists.

Thus, yesterday's promotion of Mr. Colson, the public endorsement of Colson's "worldview," the promotion of Colson's most recent book (which promotes the ECT), and lending Colson the credibility of the SBC's ERLC... all of this speaks of a continued dangerous lack of discernment in the area of ecumenism. And that this promotion occurred on a nation-wide radio program supported by the Cooperative Program makes this all the more serious.

How can any SBC leader or agency continue to promote the teaching of Charles Colson? Why are so many blind to the biblical injunction that commands us to consider anyone who brings in another gospel to be "anathema"? (Galatians 1:6-9) According to some, Richard Land is a "hero of the faith" and like the apostle Peter, Richard has courageously stood his ground for the truth on many other occasions.  Yet, in this area - again like the apostle Peter (Galatians 2) - Dr. Land has made a grave error in allowing himself to compromise in order to get along with those who promote another gospel. (That's the whole thrust of the ECT alliance, which Colson promotes in his most recent book, as well as by other public means. Dr. Land has been active in and has stated his support of the ECT alliance in the past.)

Someone may say, "But Richard Land is not promoting the ECT but only the good things that Colson is saying." Charles Colson is an unapologetic promoter of the ECT who publicly claims that "The emerging alliance between Evangelicals and Roman Catholics (ECT)… represents the most significant religious movement in America today…" (Charles Colson’s Breakpoint Commentary, 3/27/00).

To promote the teaching of Charles Colson is to do exactly as Charles Colson and Richard Neuhaus (ECT co-founders) have maintained; that is, that Richard Land still maintains his "strong personal endorsement of the (ECT) declaration."  (http://www.pinn.com/ect/land/documents.htm#4 --- http://www.pinn.com/ect/doc/)

Some today seem to think that it is unloving to call our own brethren into account for a public wrong. Scripture clearly illustrates that this accountability is part of the responsibility of all Christians, particularly of Christian leaders. This matter has been going on out in the public for over six years now!!! Are we not to correct one of our brothers FOR HIS OWN BENEFIT BEFORE GOD and for the benefit of all the brethren?

Is there something wrong with asking our brothers in leadership who know Dr. Land personally to please help him avert all this contention? Is it not also their place to call him into account? Richard Land has an effective ministry, but because of his continued promotion of men who are openly advocating ecumenical compromise, he has created a huge contention among professing Christians. There are those of us who are strongly convicted that we are obligated by God's Word to confront this error. It would be far more beneficial for the Convention and for the Lord's work in general if we could be free to confront ecumenism without having to first confront some of our own SBC executives about their continued error in this area.

(BTW... I recently made a motion at the annual SBC Convention. This motion calls for the Executive Committee to conduct an official study of this matter of ecumenism, including the relevant activities of individual SBC employees. You see, it is not just the official alliances of our agencies where there is a problem. The activities of our executive employees are a VERY large part of this whole issue. Without ecumenical involvements by our executives, most of the ecumenical entanglements of our agencies would not be able to take root.)

>> If you are new to this circle of information, you may not know what all the fuss is about regarding the ECT (Evangelicals and Catholics Together Alliance). According to Dr. Larry Lewis, former HMB President, the ECT document contains "heresy", specifically, the promotion of the "perverted doctrine of baptismal regeneration."

Here is one such quote from the foundational ECT document (http://www.pinn.com/ect/ect/default.htm)
which was co-authored by Charles Colson and Roman Catholic Priest Richard John Neuhaus...

"Those converted -- whether understood as having received the new birth for the first time or as having experienced the reawakening of the new birth originally bestowed in the sacrament of baptism -- must be given full freedom and respect as they discern and decide the community in which they will live their new life in Christ."

Brethren, that statement simply denies the very Gospel of Christ. That's something that all of us - including all of our agency heads and employees - ought to be clearly contending against, rather than helping it to continue to infiltrate into the Lord's Church through such popular ecumenists as Charles Colson.

The RADEN Report is a news and commentary service purposed to inform and educate the body of Christ regarding the dangers of ecumenism. For our purposes, ecumenism is defined as cooperative ventures of an evangelistic nature with individuals and/or groups which promote errant doctrine. Much of the New Testament was written to oppose the false doctrines of men who claimed to be Christian teachers, yet were bringing in "destructive heresies." According to Jude we are to "earnestly contend for the Faith that was once for all delivered unto the saints." This we aim to do and to encourage others in this part of God's work. If we can be of assistance to you in this way, please let us know. Additional copies (hard-copy) of RADEN are available, as well as other resources. Why not pass RADEN on to a friend? If you would like to read the ECT document, click here.  We also have the ECT put together into booklets, if you would like for us to send you one or more, request it by email.   Please include your home address and how many you would like.
